Science Research in the Field of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine

People every day rely on their muscles and skeleton to do various things, such as walk, run, or even to say hello. However, muscles and bones are also very susceptible to injury.

My name is Stephen DiMaria and I will be a junior at Yorktown High School in this upcoming school year. Currently, I am conducting my research at the Putnam Valley Hospital Center.

The field of research I am looking into is orthopedics and sports medicine. The injuries of professional athletes have inspired me to delve into this field of research. I was always curious as a child what happens biologically to people when they are injured, and how fast they recover, which has thus inspired me even more to indulge in this research.

Additionally, tears and fractures are an ubiquitous cause of pain for people throughout the world and to help people recover and assuage their pain through surgery has always been one of my primary goals in life. My research focuses on the ACL, a major muscle in the knee which is injured (usually torn) by many people. I am looking into the effectiveness of the two current surgeries that are performed on patients based on numerous variables to see which one is most effective to eliminate controversy in the orthopaedic community.

I plan to have very exciting results (males might recover better in one surgery than females or vice versa, the surgery might degenerate other parts of the knee making the surgical procedure counterproductive). I visit my mentor hebdomadally and am making great progress.
