Unreasonably altered or comprimised means you cannot add heat, A/C or electricity for that matter ?…Read More So you have to ask yourself if THAT IS unreasonable !
The Winery owners need to figure out that a public private partnership has to have both public and…Read More private benefits; otherwise it's just a public land giveaway. The open space and conservation committees were correct in noting that the "education center" was a feeble, almost tongue-in-cheek attempt at giving back to the public.
If I owned the Winery I would be proposing a long term, market rate lease for the parcel to be developed for parking and outdoor dining. Short of that, I just seeing them beating a very dead horse over and over again during the courtesy of the floor. There is no benefit to the public if they label their trellised outdoor dining as an "education center." Yorktowners aren't that dumb.
And for those saying if we don't bend over and give him our town land we're driving business out of town, just stop with the silly-talk. No entrepreneur expects their government to giveaway adjacent parcels of land for nothing to grow their business. Why should Yorktown be any different?
Yorktown should extract maximum fiscal benefit for taxpayers in return for giving away town land to private development. To date though, we just been offered some half-baked "education center" that--in reality--is a fine outdoor dining area that will have an immense and direct benefit to the Winery.
For the record, I'd love to enjoy eggs Benedict and a bloody Mary outdoors at the Winery on Sunday mornings, but at this rate and with such a disingenuous private/public partnership proposal--I don't see it happening in the near future.
Mr. Lachterman,
You wrote "When Councilmen Bianco, Paganelli and Patel decided that the…Read More Winery did not have the right to have a public hearing on their wetlands permit, they drew a line in the sand between personal interests and all business, large or small, in Yorktown."
The wetland permit was NOT for the Winery. It was town land that we--the taxpayers--own. It's not "their" permit. Do you think that we should give away--for free--any town park/wetland to any business that asks.
I'm not against working out an agreement whereby we charge the winery to develop parking and an outdoor cafe seating area on our (Yorktown owned) land. But you can bet your bottom dollar that I would want to codify it with a lease and charge him market rate for it. Capitalism, not communism.
Those councilman made the right choice. It looked and smelled like a giveaway to a political ally of the supervisor. The winery had no inherent right to a public hearing on what we, the taxpayer, do with our land.
