YHS Students Win 7 of 16 Spots at Two International Science Fairs

Seven of the 16 spots at the two international science fairs are awarded to Yorktown students.

have once again proved to be one of the smartest, most dedicated teenage scientific minds in Westchester and Putnam counties.

Students from 33 area schools presented their research at the , held on March 10 at Sleepy Hollow High School. On average, approximately half the students who participate win an award. According to school officials, nearly 90 percent of the 44 Yorktown students who participated won. 

Seven of the 16 spots at the two international science fairs, the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) and the International Sustainable World (Energy, Engineering, Environment) Project Olympiad were awarded to Yorktown students.

Two additional students were given awards based on their work in the high school Science Research Program. Tanvi Tiwari and David (Linus) Hamann will attend ISWEEEP, in Houston, Texas from May 3-8, 2012. 

Yorktown High School teacher Michael Blueglass, who is the founder and director of WESEF, said the trip to Intel ISEF is all expense paid trip for research in all areas. This region can only send 13 projects from more than 300.

"ISEF brings together 1,600 science fair winning projects from over 50 countries," he said. 

ISWEEEP is also an all expense paid trip to the competition, which brings together 600 top projects related to sustainability in Environment, Engineering and Energy from all over the world. This region can only send the projects from WESEF directly.

Laura Anderson, Frank and Lily Cao, Kathleen Mavrommatis and Priya Mohindra will all attend ISEF in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania May 13-18, 2012. was one of three students to win a spot at ISWEEEP, in Houston, Texas from May 3-8, 2012.
