Two Open Seats on Yorktown School Board

Current board president Jackie Carbone and trustee Christine Montero are up for re-election.

There are two Yorktown board of education seats open in this year's election as current board president Jackie Carbone and trustee are up for re-election. 

The two three-year terms expire on June 30, 2015.

  • Nominating petitions must be signed by 5 percent of the number of voters at the last annual election (80 signatures) and those signing the petitions must be qualified voters. Community members are encouraged to obtain more signatures than necessary for nominating petitions in the event that a name is dismissed.
  • The deadline for filing a nominating petition is Monday, April 16 at 5 p.m.

Nominating petitions for the May 15 budget and trustee vote are available in the office of the District Clerk. The district office is located at 2725 Crompond Road, Yorktown Heights.

Legal Qualifications: A candidate must be able to read and write; must be a qualified voter of the district (i.e., a United States citizen); and must have resided in the School District for an uninterrupted period of at least one year prior to the election date. A person who has been convicted of a state or federal felony may not serve on a school board unless: (1) he/she has been pardoned or otherwise restored to the rights of citizenship by the Governor or the President; or (2) his/her maximum sentence of imprisonment has expired; or (3) he/she has been discharged from parole.

Carbone has been on the Yorktown board of education since 2006 and has served as board president since the 2007-2008 school year.  in 2011 to fill the vacated seat by . 

District clerk Rebecca Narvaez said both Carbone and Montero have picked up nominating petitions, but they're not officially running until the required number of signatures has been collected. 

The board of education will take a vote to appoint next school year's board of education president during their first board of education meeting in July. 

On Thursday, March 29, from 5:45 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. there is a prospective school board member workshop at the Education House, White Plains City School District, located at 5 Homeside Lane in White Plains.

This workshop is open to all individuals interested in running for their local school board. It is provided as a public service of the Westchester-Putnam School Boards Association and is free for prospective board of education members from our member school districts.
