Lakeland Panas Cross Country Wins County Championship

This is the first County title in the program's history.

The Lakeland/Panas boys won the Westchester County Cross Country Championships on Thursday, Oct. 25 at Croton Point Park.

The Rebels scored 106 point placing 3 runners in the top 10 in a race with 260 runners and 40 public and private schools competing. Galo Vasquez placed 4th to lead the Rebels to the County Title. Kunal and Veeral Shah placed 8th and 10th. Matt Swift and Jonathan Feldman placed 38th and 46th to round out the top five for the Rebels.

This is the first County title in the program's history. Lakeland/Panas outran strong Mamaroneck and Somers teams who placed 2nd and 3rd with 228 and 236 points. The championships were especially difficult this year, said Coach Ryan Johnson, with a larger than usual 40-team field.

"There are usually about 20 to 25 teams that compete in the section for a particular class," Johnson said. "By the time sectionals come around there are usually only 8 to 12 teams left. In a 40 team County championship our athletes have to compete against the best athletes from all 40 teams in one contest."
