Senator Greg Ball Honors Yorktown Student For Achieving Girl Scout Gold Award

Senator Greg Ball (R, C, I – Patterson) honored Kristen Anderson from Yorktown Heights with a New York State Senate Proclamation for achieving her Girl Scout Gold Award.

Kristen Anderson is a Girl Scout in Troop 1491 in Yorktown Heights and is currently a Senior at Yorktown High School. Kristen's Girl Scout Gold Award Project was called ‘Caring for the Caregivers at Rosary Hill Home’, which is a skilled nursing facility that is operated entirely on donations by the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne. The home is dedicated to providing palliative care to persons afflicted with incurable cancer.

“It was a pleasure to meet Kristen and her family to hear about her Gold Award Project. Kristen is a prime example of service before self,” said Senator Greg Ball. “The caregivers at Rosary Hill work tirelessly to comfort the terminally ill, often times working several weeks straight without a single day off. Kristen’s commitment to the caregivers and her project to honor them has shown an extraordinary amount about her character. Kristen should serve as an example to all of us. I would like to thank her for the work she has done and also wish her much luck in her future endeavors.”

Last summer, Kristen's sister, Laura, was doing her Gold Award project for the patients of Rosary Hill. While Kristen was helping Laura, she was inspired by the selflessness of the Sisters, so when it came time to choose her project, she decided to do something to show appreciation to the Sisters who dedicate their lives caring for the terminally ill.

Mother Mary Francis, OP, the President of Rosary Hill, showed Kristen a structure on the property which the Sisters affectionately call their ‘Summer Home’. It is a screened building where the Sisters enjoy evenings during the Summer months. The entire structure, inside and out, needed to be refurbished so Kristen fundraised at her parish, Saint Patrick's Church in Yorktown Heights. The parishioners were very generous as many of them had loved ones who received amazing care at Rosary Hill.

Kristen sanded, stained, and painted the entire structure, and with a generous contribution from a local business, Yorktown Glass, Kristen replaced 22 screen windows. Kristen was very happy with the final result, a lovely oasis where the Sisters can relax after a long day.

Kristen is currently applying to college and she hopes to study Architecture.
