Front-Loading Washing Machines: Common Misconceptions

Since 1975, Atlantic Appliance Co. has kept the traditional values of honesty, courtesy, great service and the "Lowest Price Period".

When looking for a new washing machine, I have found many people share the same beliefs on front-loading machines that are incorrect. Front-loading machines are just what they sound like: You load your laundry in the front of the machine rather than the top. Today, I’m going to set the facts straight to help you make the best decision when purchasing a new washing machine.

The Top 5 Misconceptions About Front-Load Laundry

  1. “Front-load washing machines smell after repeated use and/or get moldy.”

A smell or mold is the result of the owner using too much detergent and can happen with any type of washing machine. Front-load washers actually use very little water to wash clothes (only 10-18 gallons) and therefore require very little detergent. The overuse of detergent can create mold in the gasket of the machine with an accompanying mildew smell. Use about half of ¼ of a cup of detergent with every load and you’ll be mold-free!

2. “I can’t pause a front-load washing machine during a cycle to add more clothing like I can with a top-loading washing machine.”

Front-load washing machines do not fill up with water like top-load washers. Instead, they add water throughout the entire cycle and tumble the clothing. A front-loading washer can be paused at almost any time during the cycle and clothing can be added.

3.”Front-load washing machines are too low for me.”

There’s a solution for this. There are special pedestals made for almost any front-loading washing machine, which can raise the appliance by up to 15 inches.

4.”Front-load washing machines don’t wash my clothes as well as top-load washing machines.”

Both machines can certainly do their jobs. However, top-loading washing machines are actually much rougher on clothing than front-loading washers.

5. “Front-loading washing machines put me at a higher risk of flooding.”

As previously mentioned, front-load washing machines do not need to fill up to wash clothing, so top-load washing machines actually have the higher risk of flooding. Front-load washing machines may load from the front, but the doors are very secure and very rarely leak.

Another fun fact: Front-load washing machines and dryers are much more energy efficient than their top-loading counterparts.
