The Somers holiday celebration kicks off this weekend with a number of events scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 2 - including the annual tree lighting, holiday music, gingerbread house display, free hot chocolate, pictures with Santa and more.

The day kicks off at 2:30 p.m. with the unveiling of "A Lionel Christmas," a display that features five decades of Lionel trains from the collection of Somers Historical Society guest curator Joe Schiavone, author of "The Old Put Guy."

The exhibit will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the third floor of the Elephant Hotel (Town Hall) in Somers. From 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. you can meet Somers natives Jo Pitkin Schiavone who will autograph their books.

The Open House at the Somers Historical Society Museum on the third floor will be held from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, the 10th annual Gingerbread House display by Somers resident Dawn White, who is the owner and baker of Meme's Treats Bakery will be held on the first floor from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Children can take pictures with Santa on the first floor of the building from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Outside on the front lawn, you can enjoy holiday music by Rich and Harry Egor from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and complimentary hot chocolate from 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sing along with the Somers Girl Scouts from 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. and make sure you stay for the Somers Christmas tree lighting at 5 p.m. on the front lawn.

Sponsors include the Somers Lions Club, Somers Historical Society and Junior Historians, Somers Chamber of Commerce and Somers Girl Scouts.

In the holiday spirit of giving, Saint Luke's Episcopal Church and the Somers Historical Society ask you to bring an unwrapped toy for children less fortunate in our state and beyond. Donations will be accepted between 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. at St Luke’s and the Somers Historical Society.

The Somers menorah lighting will be held on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 6 p.m. at the front lawn of the Somers Town House.

First of all, I don't understand why teachers are paying for anything out of pocket when the supplyRead More lists that parents receive at the end of the summer are as long as their arms. Secondly, SOCIETY lets the kids down?!?!? I think the school taxes in Yorktown should be sufficient so that the teachers don't have to pay any out-of-pocket expenses. SOCIETY does not let the kids down, it is those who are in control of the school tax monies who let the kids down. Perhaps the administrators should take salary cuts, or maybe we should even eliminate some of those administrative positions. No teacher should have to pay for supplies out of pocket.
