Yorktown Grange Fair Needs Volunteers, Entries for 89th Annual Fair

Organizers of the 89th annual Yorktown Grange Fair, the agricultural fair that is taking place in September and attracts more than 20,000 visitors each year, are looking for volunteers for the event and entries to its competitions.

"[Visitors] come to enjoy not only the rides and entertainment, but to see the tractors, flowers, produce, photography, livestock, needlework, baking, and exhibits," David Humphrey said. "Fairgoers also participate in the competitive activities and watch other events."

As a community organization, the Yorktown Grange Fair Association is in need of volunteers to assist them in a variety of ways, especially on scheduled “work days," Humphrey said.

"We want to reach out to local youth who are in need of completing community service hours required by schools, scouting, and religious organizations," he said. "Volunteering for the Grange Association is a good experience, and is a confidence builder for youth to be able to work with the guidance of adult volunteers."

Some of the help needed includes sprucing up the fairgrounds, setting up tables, assembling animal pens in the livestock tent, and helping with setting up for activities and events.

The scheduled “work days” are Saturdays, Aug. 17 and Aug. 31 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

In addition, residents could enter the fair's numerous competitions in a variety of categories – from gardening, to baking, photography, needlework, livestock, and even Legos constructions for children. There are plenty of opportunities to win a blue ribbon for best of show.

"There are no entry fees for any of the competitions, but many require some pre-planning," Humphrey said. "So, plant those veggies, water those flowers, get started on your needlework, and perfect that muffin recipe because thefair is only a few months away."

The 89th annual Yorktown Grange Fair will be held Thursday, Sept. 5 through Sunday, Sept. 8.

If residents, parents, or youth would like to receive more information or offer to volunteer, they may contact the Grange at 914-962-3900.
