Yorktown Councilman Murphy and Wife Caroline Support Hope's Door

Yorktown Councilman Terrence Murphy and his wife Caroline were among the 200 attendees at the annual fundraiser gala “An Evening of Hope” for Hope’s Door, a Pleasantville-based organization that helps victims of domestic abuse.

The event was held at Abigail Kirsch at Tappan Hill Mansion in Tarrytown on May 3. During the fundraiser, a Westchester County survivor told her story of how she and her two young daughters coped with years of domestic abuse from her ex-husband. She said Hope’s Door provided her with a safety plan, counseling, legal service assistance, and opened the “door” to “hope” of a new life.

“Domestic violence does not discriminate,” said CarlLa Horton, Executive Director of Hope’s Door. “Regardless of socioeconomic class, race, gender and age, it is a serious issue today – even in Westchester. With such striking statistics, we as a community find ourselves asking: What can we do to help those who have been abused? It starts with offering programs to victims and creating preventative services for our youth. That is why we are here. Every human being deserves to feel safe in their home and in their relationship.”

Programs and services at Hope’s Door include: a 24-hour hotline; a 16-bed emergency shelter residence; safety planning; danger assessments, support group counseling for women, men, teens and children; legal referrals; teen dating abuse prevention and community education on domestic violence issues.
