Yorktown Boy Scouts Place Flags on Veterans' Graves for Memorial Day

Yorktown Boy Scouts from Troop 174 and Cub Scouts from Pack 251 joined forces on May 24 and May 25 with the American Legion Post #1009 to honor military veterans.

To commemorate Memorial Day, the groups placed American flags on the gravestones of veterans, dating back to the Revolutionary War, who are buried in town.

Boy Scouts first went to the cemetery at the First Presbyterian Church in Yorktown on Friday, and then they went to the small cemetery on Granite Springs Road. The next day, the boys were joined by the Cub Scouts at the cemetery of the United Methodist Church in Shrub Oak.

"Despite the rain on both days, every veteran's grave was given a new American flag," Assistant Scoutmaster Kevin Byrnes said. "The boys, as well as the adult leaders, were fascinated to learn local history from American Legion historian John McQuillan.

McQuillan, a Yorktown resident who served as a communications technician in the United States Air Force, pointed out to the group that some of the veterans' graves date back to the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.
