October Events at Somers Library: Public Speaking, Jazz Trio, Preventing Alzheimer’s

Here is what will be going on at the Somers Library during the month of October:

Saturday, October 5 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. 

Podium Power – A Public Speaking Workshop

Podium Power is a free interactive workshop on the art of public speaking, which will provide expert training for individuals who want to improve their ability to speak powerfully in front of an audience. Participants will learn how to organize their material, speak persuasively, and master the non-verbal delivery skills that convey authority and confidence. Led by Dana Rubin, president of Rubin & Co., a speechwriter and presentation coach in in New York City. Rubin has more than 20 years of experience helping speakers in the corporate, nonprofit, and political sectors. Sponsored by the Friends of the Somers Library.

Sunday, October 6 at 2 p.m. 

Dmitri Kolesnik Jazz Trio is back by popular demand and Sponsored by the Friends of the Somers Library. Dmitri brings a great accomplished jazz trio to perform at the Somers Town Hall (not the change of location) featuring: Paul Bollenback on guitar & Jimmy Madison on drums. They will perform a mixture of evergreen standards & Kolesnik original compositions in a swinging modern jazz style. Three-part series: Thursdays Oct. 10, 17 and 24 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The Exploration of Form & Fluidity: A Continuum Movement Introduction Class 

This free, three-part class can benefit people of all walks of life, ages and levels of movement and meditation experience. This meditation style is based on the premise that movement is what we are as well as something we do. Continuum is a very fluid movement meditation work that employs various breathing, soundings and movement sequences in order for us to dive deeper into our awareness, creativity and self-expression of our bodies and minds. 

Led by Melanie Gambino who has been practicing and teaching movement for over 30 years. She has taught classes in Continuum in a variety of venues from theater, dance and performing art schools to local high schools and hospitals. Presently Melanie teaches a variety of Health and Wellness, dance, movement and theater arts classes at the Harvey school and teaches Continuum in the dance department at SUNY Purchase.

Preventing Alzheimer’s and Reversing Dementia 

Concerned about Alzheimer’s for yourself or a loved one? Sharp Again Naturally, a new 501(c) (3) public charity, presents clips from a documentary-in-the-making they are funding that features doctors, scientists, and patients who have reversed Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia using natural approaches. Presentation describes seven major causes of dementia that are seldom tested for but that can be treated. Q and A to follow.

October 27 at 3 p.m. 

"You're the Top" -- The Life and Music of Cole Porter

Sponsored by the Friends of the Somers Library. This show features the popular group, “The Two of Us Plus One." The group is composed of Soprano, Joanne Kant,  Mezzo Soprano, Wanda Grochowski and pianist, Justine Macurdy. Together they will perform many of Cole Porter’s major hits, as well as providing biographical information about the composer and facts about his major works.

The current show features such hits as:  You’re the Top, Let’s Do It, Night and Day, In the Still of the Night, My Heart Belongs to Daddy, and Well, Did You Evah?This performance is free but space is limited, so please register by calling the library at 914 232-5717 or online at www.somerslibrary.org.
