Lakeland Student Earns Gold Award with 'Adopt a Grandparent' Project

Lakeland High School senior Dana Coniglio is the recipient of the Girl Scout Gold Award, which is the highest award girls can earn in scouting.

Her project was called "Adopt a grandparent" for which she had students (ages 5-17), from both Lakeland and Yorktown schools, write letters and draw pictures for senior citizens who are living at the Country House Assisted Living Home.

"The seniors loved receiving these letters," she said.

Coniglio also ran arts and craft nights, as well as bing nights at the home.

"I enjoyed bridging the gap between the geriatric community and students of our town," she sad. "Sometimes seniors are often forgotten about in our society, yet they hold the history and charisma of our community."

Coniglio's project will continue on for years through other Girl Scout troops and the enrichment program at Crompond School, she said.

"I am so overjoyed that I was able to work with the Country House to earn my award," she said.

Yorktown Councilman Vishnu Patel presented Anderson with a certificate of achievement on behalf of Yorktown town board members.
