87th Annual Grange Fair Coming in September

The annual Grange Fair, which is the only agricultural fair in Westchester County will be held from Thursday, Sept. 8 through Sunday, Sept. 11.

Every year Yorktowners look forward to the , which is the only agricultural fair in Westchester County. This year it will be held from Thursday, Sept. 8 through Sunday, Sept. 11.

The theme of the 87th Annual Yorktown Grange Fair is "Sew It, Grow It, Show It," which will highlight the contribution and accomplishments of local residents.

Since the Grange Fair began, its purpose has been to encourage the community to exhibit their best and has provided a showcase for the town’s people to “show off” their home grown (or homemade) goods, from vegetables, to flowers, needlework, baking, photography, livestock and poultry.

Lisa Fine, who is one of the organizers of the fair and has been involved for more than a decade, said highlights of the 2011 fair will include a horse show exhibition, livestock animals, audience participation games, and carnival rides.

The annual tractor and antique farm equipment parade will be held on Saturday, Aug. 10. Starting at the Yorktown Heights firehouse field on Veterans Road, the 1-mile procession will ride up Hanover Street, turn left onto Moseman Road, enter into the Grange Fair and finish with a celebrated loop through the fairgrounds. A special ‘rider’ in the parade will be Miss Junior Teen New York - Yorktown’s own Claire Donaldson.

Throughout the run of the fair, special animal shows are scheduled including The Marvelous Mutts, A Canine Spectacular, a dog sport entertainment show that showcases some of the world’s finest canine athletes featuring a cast of shelter-rescued dogs.

"The always popular ‘Chase’s Racing and Swimming Pigs’ are returning to this year’s fair for another round of fun competition," Fine said.

Also scheduled is a performance by The Smithereens, whose songs combine elements of 1960s British pop with harder rock elements to produce a sound that is "refreshingly unique and totally enjoyable," Fine said. Other live musical entertainment guests include: Class Action; Swing for Jazz Quartet, Us, Mojo Monde; Annie and the Natural Wonder Band, The Thunder Road Band, The Sundown Band, and Roadside Poets.
