Since 1909, Yorktown Heights Fire Engine Company No. 1 has served the fire safety needs of the residents of…More Yorktown. The department's ranks are comprised entirely of volunteer firefighters.
The district is responsible for fire protection for approximately 36.2 square miles and 30,000 residents and businesses, and responds to 500-600 fire calls annually.
YHFD responds to structure fires, vehicle fires, fire alarms, inside/outside smoke investigations, gas leaks, motor vehicle accidents, hazardous materials incidents, vehicle extrications, and CO alarms. The District does not respond to EMS calls.
Firefighters are trained up to the New York State Firefighter I level. They undergo classes and training seminars, and most members attend over 100 hours of training each year. YHFD holds training drills weekly.
The District operates 4 Engines, 1 Ladder, 1 Rescue, 1 Tanker, and a Mini-Pumper out of its two stations.
Station 1 is located at 1916 Commerce St. and it operates Engine 270, Engine 273, Ladder 51, Tanker 14, Utility 83, Light Tower 6
Station 2 is located at 744 Locksley Rd. and it operates Engine 272, Engine 271, Rescue 16, Rescue 55, MA-8, Utility 36 And YHFD Marine/Dive
The District is primarily residential, with places ranging from 1-2 family houses to multi-million dollar mansions. The District included six schools/learning centers, a theater, two golf courses, as well as a 6-mile stretch of the Taconic State Parkway, and the IBM Watson Research Facility. The Croton Watershed area (NYC Water Supply) makes up a moderate portion of the south end of the district.
If interested in becoming a member, applicants need to fill out an application and return it to the Headquarters any Monday night 6 p.m.- 9 p.m., The process may take time due to background checks and a department physical.
