<p>The Benjamin Franklin Elementary School is located in Yorktown Heights. As of 2010, there are 635 students who attend full-day kindergarten through fifth grade. </p>
<p>To make parents and students feel at home, parent newsletters are sent home every month with information about school events and activities. </p> <p>The school provides a nurse, an occupational therapist, a physical therapist, psychologist, social worker, two speech and language teachers, an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher, four reading specialists, a math specialist and two resource room teachers. </p> <p>Benjamin Franklin's library houses a collection of approximately 10,000 volumes of books. Students visit the library weekly for book selection and guidance on how to independently use the library. </p> <p>The school's art program gives students access to resources such as a potter's wheel, full-color design examples, printmaking, stitchery, drawing basics and mathematically inspired fiber pattern art.</p> <p>Students attend a 40-minute General Music class weekly. Beginning in fourth grade, students can join chorus, and fifth graders can join band and orchestra. </p> <p>Benjamin Franklin was the first school in the district to have an Energy Room as part of its physical education. Using the Energy Room gives students the ability to understand the importance of physical activity and proper nutrition.</p> <p>The Challenge Course was added to the PE program with the help of the Lakeland Education Foundation and a grant written by Mrs. Janik and Mr. Robinson. Students work individually and as part of a team to solve problems. </p> <p>Parents, teachers and administrators can become involved with the Benjamin Franklin Parent Teacher Association (PTA). These members volunteer to provide programs, field trips and other school events. </p> <p>The principal is Patricia McIlvenny, and the assistant principal is Dr. Laura Cuddy.</p>
