Rough and Tumble Turkey Bowl Draws Teams and Spectators

The Turkey Bowl Recreational Coed Flag Football Tournament on Saturday, November 30 was an afternoon of competitive fun and a successful food drive for the Yorktown Community Help food pantry. Seven teams played flag football at its best on a cold November afternoon at Navajo Fields. Participating teams were the Riverhawks, Brandon’s Team, the Grape Apes, Vigor Way, Swirls (one of the tournament supporters!), The Bros and the Beastie Boys. The stands were full of spectators who braved the frigid temps to watch their stars hit the field.

Play was active and competitive, with messy end zones contributing to some interesting TDs! The tournament was a showcase of fun, competition and good sportsmanship. With volunteer officials (none too experienced) there were a few heated moments, but they were brief and the good natured spirit of a charity event prevailed. One of our officials mentioned the “let them play theory” and that the “players were really great about the whole thing, even when an official blew a play dead in error.” Another official mentioned that the “teams were great sports!”

The championship game was exciting with the Riverhawks and Brandon’s Team battling it out to the end. At half time Riverhawks were up 30-28 and the final was 36-28. The Riverhawks were awarded Turkey Bowl Champs commemorative pinnies. Runners-up, Brandon’s Team took home YSA Turkey Bowl backpacks.  Riverhawks MVP, Jesse Mainiero, won a Rawlings Pro5 series official NCAA leather football.

The Yorktown News posted some great photos of the tournament on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.406566979446895.1073741851.222676131169315&type=1

After the tournament, players and friends enjoyed eats and drinks at Swirls and Murphy’s. Swirls offered a welcome cup of hot chocolate and hot soups, as well as frozen yogurt for the hardy. Teams gathered at Murphy’s to continue the fun at an after party, where they enjoyed piles of wings and drink discounts. We’ve heard reports that the Riverhawks continued their winning ways by downing a couple of those piles of wings.

Shout Out to Our Friends at Yorktown Community Help Food Pantry

As part of the Turkey Bowl, YSA coordinated food donations to the Yorktown Community Help Food Pantry. Yorktown Community Help Inc. is a Yorktown-based nonprofit which provides food to individuals and families in need. It is 100% volunteer run and accepts donations and non-perishable foods. YCH also operates a thrift shop in the YCCC building and accepts donations of clothing and other goods. All proceeds help pay for the food that YCH distributes. Call for more information at 914-962-1144. YSA thanks everyone for their donations!!
