Starting Over

Starting Over

There are many ways women start over in life: when they marry, become a mother, find their calling and then seek balance.  In the past two years I have had to endure the trials of starting over in my career twice.  I was fortunate to spend 2013 working with a team of pediatric gynecologists from Valhalla.  After 20 years of treating newly pubertal girls as well as their moms, I learned even more about caring for the gynecologic concerns of our youngest patients.

I also learned about myself.  I am not as much of a follower as a leader when it comes to my patients.  I am impatient with unnecessary hierarchy and do not tolerate fools gladly (not the physicians, mind you, they were wonderful.)  So I struck out to seek a place where I could find a good fit for me.  I know now that I didn't consider the specifics of the move last year, because I was in a sad, inexplicable position; I didn't have the presence of mind to ask the right questions.

Older and wiser, with new insights and some luck, I find myself working in a lovely office in Somers, NY, only 15-20 minutes from my home.  The best commute of my life.  My favorite nurse, Meaghan came with me.  The doors opened 3 weeks ago, and we already have set up a complete office, with EMR and terrific staff, wise leadership from the main group (Northern Medical) and the memory of what I liked about my job.  I like my patients.

I like getting to know about their goals and dreams, their medical needs now and in the future.  I love to hear about their life milestones so much, that sometimes we forget why they came.  I hope this office is where I will practice, as a wonderful colleague wished me recently: ...'until I am 80.'  As Steve Jobs said, ..."the only way to do great work is to love what you do.  If you haven't found it yet, keep looking.  Don't settle."  I love what I do; I think I can stop looking.

My new office is in the Bailey Court Office Center, Somers. To make an appointment or check in, please call: 914.277.4544.
