Java Jive began in the early 1980's when Tom Madden, the band leader, asked Chuck Garrett to return to Boston from Hawaii where they were performing as two of the three male leads in the musical review, Lullaby of Swing. In that show, Maddenacted as not only the production manager, auditioning and training all of the men and women of the show, but also as the arranger, a singer, trombonist, dancer, and keyboard player. Garrett was also featured as a vocalist, trumpet player, and dancer in the production. Upon returning to Boston to create Java Jive, the third member of the group was hired. After performing for six years with two talented musicians that chose another direction, the group eventually enlisted Don Richard to be the full time lead trumpet player.

Some of the highlights for the group over the years have been singing the National Anthem for the Boston Celtics for fourteen years, being the opening act for the group Chicago in front of eight thousand people, and playing for all of the major Boston sports teams at both fund raising events and private parties celebrating their seasons. The group has continuously entertained at Stonehill College's annual reunions and holiday parties for over 18 years.
