Primary Election; 9/11; Back to School at Lakeland; Support-A-Walk Open House

Monday, Sept. 9

  • Lakeland schools open their doors on Monday, Sept. 9. The schedule for the first day of school: Half Day - Elementary School K-5-11:15 a.m. dismissal, Full Day - Middle School, High School - Grade 9 reports at 7:30 a.m., Grades 10-12 report at 10:30 a.m., High school and middle school will dismiss at regular times on the first day, Sept. 9. BOCES Tech Center begins for high school students on September 9.
Tuesday, Sept. 10
  • All Lakeland schools will be on their regular, full day schedule on Tuesday, September 10, 2013.
  • The Primary Election is scheduled to take place in the towns of Yorktown and Somers on Tuesday, Sept. 10. The polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 9 p.m. On the Somers ballots, Christine Robbins is looking to receive the Independence Party line for Somers Supervisor. Town board candidates Harvey Kriedberg and Chris Foley are looking for the Independence Party Line. Click here for more details on the Yorktown candidates.
  • Everyone is welcome to join Support Connection at their Support-A-Walk Open House on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Meet Support Connection staff and volunteers, enjoy light refreshments, and receive hands-on help getting ready for the 19th Annual Support-A-Walk for Breast and Ovarian Cancer. Wednesday, Sept. 11
  • It's the anniversary of the tragic Sept. 11 terrorist attack. Check back with Patch this week for more coverage.
  • Shrub Oak's Pure Physique fitness studio is honoring the men and women that serve each day. The event is a celebration of these individuals. Men and women in uniform will be given a goodie bag of healthy on-the-go high-protein shakes and bars. More details here.
Thursday, Sept. 12
  • The Board of Education will hold a work session on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Benjamin Franklin Elementary School, 3477 Kamhi Drive, Yorktown Heights. The meeting is open to the public. Although there is no opportunity for public comment at work sessions, there are two opportunities for public comment at the Board's regular monthly meeting.   • Somers town board members will meet Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall for their regular meeting. 
Friday, Sept. 13
  • You can help prevent child abuse one family at a time. The Child Abuse Prevention Center is offering a 12-hour Volunteer training, taught by the Center's professional staff which will include information about child abuse and neglect, child and family development, effective discipline, parenting skills, relationship building, and stress relief and anger management techniques and other pertinent topics. The event is on Friday, Sept. 13 from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. More details here.
