Y'town Fire District Vote June 17 4-9PM

Y'town Fire District is asking voters for the 4th time to approve a bond issue to finance an unwanted and unneeded station on Rte 134. The Kitchawan Fire Station was defeated by public referendum three times in 1999 and 2000, the last time by a 3:1 margin. So instead of listening to the voters, the Yorktown Fire District stockpiled $1.1 million of taxpayer money over the last ten years to finance this project. But guess what? It isn’t enough. The estimate is now up to $1.75 million, not including $170,000 spent on land in 1997. The referendum also tucks in a request to borrow $1.5 million to renovate Locksley Road. No choice - it's all or nothing. What has voters very concerned is the lack of effective notice. Sure, there were minimal legal postings, but there has been zero outreach to the community to explain the idea, or build consensus on a regional plan that makes better use of existing assets. Millwood’s Station #2 is a straight shot (1.9 miles to be exact) to the west of the proposed Kitchawan Station on Rte 134. Here we are at another cross roads with the Fire District. Please cast your ballot for fiscal restraint and send a clear message that Voters Matter.
