Walk for Special Olympics and Vincent Miritello on April 29

The "Vincent Miritello Special Olympics NY Miles for Medals Walk" will take place on Sunday, April 29 at Franklin D. Roosevelt Park in Yorktown.

Paula Miritello's late brother Vincent has left such a huge impression on her life. Since his passing, the Yorktown native to help keep her brother's memory alive. 

For the past seven years, she has participated in the Special Olympics walk in honor her brother, who had cerebral palsy and passed away 11 years ago at age 20. 

She said her team 'My Brother Vinny' has been the top team in the county and Special Olympics officials renamed the walk after him this year– from "Special Olympics Miles for Medals Walk" to the "Vincent Miritello FDR Miles for Medals Walk."

This year, the " will take place on Sunday, April 29 at . If you'd like to donate, you can do so online or in person by April 15 to get entered into a raffle for two tickets to the Westchester Broadway Dinner Theater in Elmsford and into one of raffles for Yankee tickets, concert tickets, and more.

Every donation counts, Miritello said, and added that 100 percent of the donations is used for programs only.

"We are walking to help the 3,500 athletes who live in Hudson Valley Region," she said. The Special Olympics is a wonderful organization for over 43 years, Special Olympics has provided year-round athletic training and competition for people with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics gives them the opportunity to demonstrate their skills, sportsmanship and victories. All of this is at no charge to the athletes or their families."

The day of the walk, registration and breakfast begins at 9 a.m. The warm up and walk is at 10 a.m. There will be an after party and BBQ/picnic at 11 a.m. 

There will be everything from a face painter, to a petting zoo, cupcake decorating, Yorktown Heights Fire Department truck, a band, vendors and more.

"It is going to be a fun filled day and hopefully the start of a wonderful tradition," Miritello said said.

  • Start a team, join a team or donate to a team. http://2012.kintera.org/VincentMiritelloMFMWalk All donors will be entered into raffles; each team has specific raffles for each team ranging from Yankee Red Sox, Yankee/Subway Series, Roger Waters “The Wall” Tickets at Yankee Stadium. 
  • Donate items for raffle. If you have a business, you can donate items for raffle the day of the walk. All donations are 100 percent a tax write off.
  • Attend a pre-walk party on April 14.
