Key to Awesomeness:

Alex Nicolato first joined the Yorktown Volunteer Ambulance Corps Youth Group with the intent of potentially helping people. He has kept that commitment of service during his four years of high school.

As the First Lieutenant and a cadet, Nicolato’s duties range from assisting emergency medical technicians in ambulances to training Youth Group members dispatch on the radio in response to emergency calls.

“Alex continues to volunteer a minimum of 24 hours a month, but always goes beyond the minimum requirements,” said Kathleen McCrink, advisor for the Youth Group and former member. “Alex has shown great leadership skills and is an asset to the Youth Group and a great role model for his peers.”

Through YVAC, Nicolato received CPR, First Aid, and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) trainings. Additionally, he holds certification from FEMA ICS (Federal Emergency Management Agency Incident Command System).

With other Youth Group members, Nicolato participates in community events, such as the Grange Fair, as a medical standby administering first aid. Six months of dispatching for emergency calls sent from Yorktown Police Department and meeting the age requirement of a minimum 16 years of age, qualified Nicolato to provide patient care (like taking vital signs) on ambulance rides under the supervision of a senior Corps member.

“I am dedicated because of the experiences I have with [YVAC], and the difference I can make,” Nicolato said. “I've come away with a sense of confidence, crucial in a leadership role. We are given the power to invest ourselves into serving our community.”

Nicolato, whose future career paths include law enforcement, conservation and environment, received the rank of Airman First Class of Civil Air Patrol (United States Air Force Auxiliary) and volunteers at the Wolf Conservation Center.
