Potluck Meal at Hilltop Hanover Farm

                                                 By Tom McLoughlin

Hilltop Hanover Farm hosted a “Potluck Meal” on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 3:00 – 6:00 PM. Over 100 supporters of HHF attended this gala event highlighted by a raffle, silent auction, and entertainment by Hudson Crossing.  The HHF volunteers shared an enjoyable meal of hot dishes, finger foods, and dessert provided by the guests.

Lucille Munz, director of the Hilltop Hanover Farm and Environmental Center, and Helen Brady, President of the Friends of Hilltop Hanover Farm greeted the guests and thanked them for their support of the Farm.  They also announced the first annual HHF appeal conducted by the Friends of Hilltop Hanover Farm. The Friends of Hilltop Hanover Farm – an all-volunteer group – wishes to raise $50,000 for 2014. Additional information about how one can donate may be found at its website: www.hilltophanoverfarm.org.

Also thanked were the volunteers and local businesses that contributed to the raffle and silent auction: Birdsall House, Watershed Agricultural Council, Cooking in Westchester, Conscious Wine, Katonah Nursery in Somers, Faraway Farm Alpacas, Broken Bow Brewery, Yorktown Pastry Shop, Hair Design Center, Yorktown Coach Diner, Nuttin to It Restaurant and Catering, Ed Janson, Cynthia Caoine, Pam and Tom McLoughlin, Susan Hubbard, and Laura O’Donohue.

The afternoon festivities, coordinated by Susan Hubbard, volunteer director at the Farm, took place in the educational center where people enjoyed delicious food, conversations, and the music of Hudson Crossing, a bluegrass band. The band, which provided great holiday cheer, consists of Dave Cobb on guitar/vocals, Mary DeBerry on bass/vocals, Terry Ghee on fiddle, David Angell on mando/vocals, and Larry Longo on banjo.

A raffle culminated the afternoon’s activities. Helen Brady, President of Friends of Hilltop Hanover Farm, raffled off HHF gift certificates, dinner gift certificates, baskets of cheer, a farm share basket, and the grand prize – a CSA share valued at $650.  She and Lucille Munz thanked all who attended and wished that they would continue to show support for the Farm by buying a CSA share (20 weeks of fresh produce from June – October ) and/or volunteering time at the Farm. They also thanked the HHF farmers headed by Brett Alcaro, farm manager; Mike Fedison, assistant farm manager: Wilson Chang, and Max Zanke for their dedication to the Farm.

The gathering rekindled memories of how neighbors used to enjoy a meal together and then raise a barn all in one afternoon. That same spirit existed at Hilltop Hanover Farm on Dec. 7.  They were not raising a barn but shared the same resolve – to see Hilltop Hanover Farm continue as a vital and essential part of the northern Westchester County landscape.

Anyone wishing to make a donation is encouraged to write that tax deductible check to “Friends of Hilltop Hanover Farm,” Hilltop Hanover Farm , Hanover St., Yorktown Heights, NY 10598.
