Small Changes Add Up

Many dog training problems seem to be complex and insurmountable. However, small changes will make dramatic improvements.

"All difficult things have their origin in that which is easy, and great things in that which is small." - Lao-Tzu (Ancient Chinese Philosopher)

I have many owners come to me with dog training problems that they think can never be fixed. They see them as insurmountable problems that they will just have to live with. They may have even tried working with other trainers. Sometimes the owners are at such a loss that they feel their only options are to live unhappily with their dog or surrender their dog to a shelter where they are often euthanized. I can see where people might think that their dog is "incurable", but that's not often the case.

Lao-Tzu knew more about dog training then we or he, ever knew. Most dog training problems "have their origin in that which is easy". Many dog training problems are not as complex as people think. When you work with a knowledgeable and experienced trainer, they should be able to assess the root cause of your dog's behavior problem, and often the solution is easy - but needs to be followed through with consistency.

Owners are sometimes apprehensive in working with a trainer because they think it will involve a lot of time and effort on their part (and as we all know, those are rare commodities for most people). I have found that we can all achieve "great things" in dog training by doing things "that which is small". If you have a trainer that has laid out a complete and simple plan for you to follow, then what Lao-Tzu is completely right, we can achieve great things through that which is small.

More often than not, small and easy changes when it comes to our dog will enable us to improve what had seemed like a very complex and difficult dog training problem. You just need to know what to do, and we can "Change the World for Dogs".

Mr. Lachterman, You wrote "When Councilmen Bianco, Paganelli and Patel decided that theRead More Winery did not have the right to have a public hearing on their wetlands permit, they drew a line in the sand between personal interests and all business, large or small, in Yorktown." The wetland permit was NOT for the Winery. It was town land that we--the taxpayers--own. It's not "their" permit. Do you think that we should give away--for free--any town park/wetland to any business that asks. I'm not against working out an agreement whereby we charge the winery to develop parking and an outdoor cafe seating area on our (Yorktown owned) land. But you can bet your bottom dollar that I would want to codify it with a lease and charge him market rate for it. Capitalism, not communism. Those councilman made the right choice. It looked and smelled like a giveaway to a political ally of the supervisor. The winery had no inherent right to a public hearing on what we, the taxpayer, do with our land.
