September and Somers; the man, the town and terrorism

Welcome to this blog!  Sad to say it is a fitting day to launch .  How coincidental is it that our Town's namesake, Richard Somers, paid the ultimate price for his country in a War off the Barbary Coast (North Africa) fighting terrorists of the early 19th century during the month of September..  More than two centuries later, the United States faces the same challenges in the same part of the world.  Since Richard Somers passing, the Marine Corps hymn has paid homage to Somers and his crew"..from the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli..."; books have been written, ships named after the one he perished upon (u.s.s. Intrepid), and, our beloved hometown was renamed in his honor by the NY State Assembly in 1808.  He was undoubtedly a hero in his day, as are those who perished on September 11 who we memorialize today. Ironic how terrorism reared its'ugly head in September two centuries apart impacting our Town.   History truly repeated itself.
