Yorktown Students Share Love of Dance at Annual Dance Show
Performances are on Friday, Feb. 1 and Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Yorktown High School auditorium.
Yorktown High School's Dance Company students will perform their annual dance show, which consists of 26 dances, on Friday, Feb. 1 and Saturday, Feb. 2.
Students practice throughout the year for this event, which has been held under the direction of high school health teacher Ronnie Dwyer for 39 years.
All performances will be held at the Yorktown High School auditorium. The evening shows on Friday and Saturday begin at 7:30 p.m. The matinee show on Saturday begins at 2 p.m.

The repertoire this season is comprised of various genres of dance,including Ballet, Pointe, Modern, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop, Bollywood, Broadway, Irish, African, Latin (Cha Cha),Hustle, East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, Hawaiian, Step, Broadway Tap, Kickline, Lyrical, and Breakdance.
Approximately 90 students, both male and female, make up the dance company. Many of the male dancers are featured in a “Just Guys” number, Hip Hop, and Breakdance. They will also be featured in the several partner styles of dance including Hustle, East Coast Swing, Cha Cha, and the recently added West Coast Swing and a Hip Hop partnering dance.

Each spring, choreographers are selected to choreograph various pieces to be considered for the following year’s show. The new dance numbers are prepared during the spring and summer months. At the start of the school year, each dance must be approved and or edited by show director Veronica Dwyer. When September arrives, auditions are held for new members.
Rehearsals begin in October, as soon as the new members of the Company are selected. Participating in the company is no easy feat; most dancers are expected to rehearse daily for several hours after school from October through February.
Costume manager is Marguerite Nelson. The lighting for the show has been designed by professional lighting designer, Kevin Gleason, with music edited by Sophia Calidonna. Betsy Musso is the Tech Crew advisor. In addition, each year teacher Gerri Kreppel and many alumni return to lend a helping hand.
Tickets for reserved seating are $15 and will be on sale in the high school lobby through Friday, Feb. 1 from 9:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Remaining tickets will be available at the door.
