Yorktown Holds Budget Hearing Before May 17 Vote, No Comments at Meeting

Residents will vote on the budget May 17 at the Mohansic Elementary School from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Yorktown school officials presented their budget proposal in front of a small audience Monday night during the state-mandated public hearing before the May 17 budget vote. There were no comments, so officials quickly closed it. 

The budget for the fiscal year 2011-2012 remains $91,125,000 as last month by board members. The approved budget includes a 1.99 percent tax levy increase and 1.86 percent tax rate increase. This year’s total budget increases 1.32 percent more than last year’s budget, or about $1.184 million.

The tax levy increase is $6,000 under Gov. Andrew Cuomo's proposed 2-percent tax cap, Assistant Superintendent of Business Tom Cole said.

During the board of education meeting, officials accepted the following gifts and donations:

Mildred E. Strang Middle School:

  • $30 donation for library books, New York Life Foundation.

Crompond Intemediate School:

  • $500 for Revolutionary War Encampment from Michael and Beartrice Cushner.

Mohansic Elementary School:

  • $425 from Mohansic PTA for Around the World Assembly.
  • $350 from Mohansic PTA for Skype visits for students.
  • $819 from Mohansic PTA for show tickets for students and chaperones.

Administrators also made the following appointments: Tina Trainor, currently a reading teacher, will assume the position of Leave Replacement Principal for Crompond Elementary for several weeks; Michael Rubenfeld will complete  the remaining weeks of the baseball season.
