Lakeland 'Future Leaders' to Host Indoor Community Tag Sale for Charity

Future Business Leaders of America to hold an indoor community tag sale and Site-Based Team have organized a beautification project on April 21.

Members of the 's Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) are hosting an at the school on Saturday, April 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to raise money for a charity.

The charity of their choice will be selected by the group based upon how much money the students raise. 

"This group is just beginning, so they are trying to raise money to use for next year in order to compete in FBLA events," said Maria Jeffrey, teacher/advisor for the FBLA at the middle school. "The students have worked diligently placing fliers around the town and school, and pricing items that have been donated by staff members as well as people in the community." 

That same day, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. students will participate in a beautification project that coincides with Earth Day. Everyone is welcome, just bring gloves, a rake and shovel.

The Beautification Day is a project of the Site-Based Team, a shared-leadership group consisting of administrators, teachers and parents. 

"We will replant sections of the school lawn, plant trees, and learn more about sustainable farming and waste water management," said Frank Yanoti, 7th grade assistant principal of the school. "There will also be some activities for younger children."

Anyone interested in participating in the community tag sale can rent a table for $25 and keep your profits or donate items to the Future Business Leaders of America table. There will also be baked goods for sale.

Also in attendance will be the Shrub Oak-based , which plans on giving a percentage of their profits to the middle school group.

First of all, I don't understand why teachers are paying for anything out of pocket when the supplyRead More lists that parents receive at the end of the summer are as long as their arms. Secondly, SOCIETY lets the kids down?!?!? I think the school taxes in Yorktown should be sufficient so that the teachers don't have to pay any out-of-pocket expenses. SOCIETY does not let the kids down, it is those who are in control of the school tax monies who let the kids down. Perhaps the administrators should take salary cuts, or maybe we should even eliminate some of those administrative positions. No teacher should have to pay for supplies out of pocket.
