Three Yorktown High School Students Win Silver Awards for Science Research

Students win silver medals and scholarships at the largest international science fair for projects focusing on sustainability.

During the world’s largest international science fair for projects focusing on sustainability last week, three students from the science research program won silver medals and scholarships valued at $600 each.

Two of the three students presented their research in energy at the International Sustainable World (Energy, Engineering and Environment) Project Olympiad, (ISWEEEP).

Linus (David) Hamann (a junior) won for his research presentation entitled, “Forecasting and Managing Solar Energy -Developing algorithms to handle the fluctuating supply of solar energy.”

Tanvi Tiwari (a junior) won for her research presentation entitled, “Optimization of Ground-Source Well Locations.”

Miwa Wenzel (a senior) won for her entry in the environmental category with her research presentation, “The Distribution and Co-Occurrence of Euryceabislineata and Introduced Boraria stricta in Freshwater Streambeds: Evidence of Competition for Space?”

More than 1,000 top-ranking high school participants from 44 states and 69 countries competed in Houston, Texas to share their ideas, experience and knowledge to maintain global sustainability in the fifth annual event.

This year, the Westchester/Putnam region was able to send eight projects to ISWEEEP – three of those were Yorktown High School Science Research students, one from Ossining, two from Sleepy Hollow, one from Briarcliff Manor and one student from Somers.

Up next: Yorktown High School Science Research students who won the top spots at the Westchester Science Fair (WESEF) will travel to Pittsburgh, PA to compete in the other international science fair next week. In Pittsburgh, more than 1,500 science fair winners from every state and 50 countries will compete in all categories of research at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF). This is the larger and more global of the two Intel sponsored science fairs.

The Yorktown Science Research students who won a spot to ISEF are Priya Mohindra, Kathleen Mavrommatis, Laura Anderson and Frank and Lily Cao. Learn more about projects from more than 70 Yorktown students at the end of year symposium on Thursday, May 31 at 7 p.m. in Yorktown High School.
