Theatre Company is French Hill Building's New Tenant

Eclipse Theatre Company at the idle French Hill Elementary School building is located at 2051 Baldwin Road, Yorktown Heights.

There is a new act in town occupying the idle building in Yorktown.

The Infinity Repertory Company and its parent theatre school The Eclipse Theatre Company are the newest tenants in the building. They're offering year-round theatre training and performing opportunities for their students.

The young actors said they are excited for their new theatre home at French Hill.

"Our new theatre home has lots of room, inside and out," Jessica Shaw, of Somers, said. "I love the patios and big rehearsal rooms."

The Infinity Repertory Company, one of Eclipse Theatre Company’s senior companies, is run by the students themselves. They are in charge of fundraising, marketing and most aspects of their productions.

In the summer they tour European cities and put on a show. This year they began with a sold out Off-Broadway run and concluded with performances at the 2012 Edinburgh Fringe Theatre Festival in Scotland, where they performed "Mod," a musical about teenagers reaction to the Beatles invasion of America.

"Negotiations for French Hill were still going on when the company left for Scotland," Associate Director James Gerth said. "Many of the group had toured this facility and were hoping to continue their theatre studies and performances here."

Brian Arkin, who has been in five shows with Infinity, said he was excited to be moving into French Hill, which he called "great space on a beautiful campus."

"What a great year!" the Mt. Kisco resident said.

Eclipse Theatre Company at French Hill is a fully functioning, year-round theatre school. Through theatre, young people can find their “inner light” of self-confidence, sensitivity, creativity and leadership, organizers said. The theatre company offers programs for children of all ages.

Eclipse Theatre Company at French Hill is located at 2051 Baldwin Road, Yorktown Heights. For information on classes, productions, and registration go to www.eclipsetheatrecompany.com or call 914-218-3210.

I visit Yorktown often, pass by French Hill school all the time, and DUH! Never noticed it was empty! What happened to the French Hill school? Why did it close? When did this happen? So many stores etc. seem to be closing in Yorktown.

Elizabeth, thanks for commenting. The French Hill Elementary School was closed due to low student enrollment, effective fall of the 2010-2011 school year. It was closed under a consolidation plan unveiled by the district. The school's students were moved to three other schools – Mohansic, which had students Kindegarten through 2nd grade, added third grade; Brookside School became K-3; and Crompond School became 4-5. School officials have said making French Hill idle is saving the district $1 million every year.

French Hill has been closed before. This was predicted 10 years ago by Demographers the Distract hires to chart potential enrollments. There was a spike in births and people moving in with kids. The last time it was closed it was almost sold to a Chemical company that had one employee on the School Board. A member of what is now the UTY sued to block the sale.and won. That School Board member quit the Board and moved out of Town rapidly. It was the beginning of the end for a Board with people on there over 15 years. This Board is obviously smarter. The School will probably open somewhere down the road.

This is great news! The shows being put on by the older troupe look great, [title of show] in particular is apparently very good, I've heard music from it on the XM Broadway channel. Yorktown Stage does a great job, but they only do big shows that can draw a lot of people. I've been to White Plains and Mamaroneck recently for some more unusual stuff like Spring Awakening and Next to Normal. Hopefully stuff that like can now be seen in Yorktown. BTW for those who do not recall, James Gerth was partners with Barry when Yorktown Stage first opened.
