Patch: What are some of your fondest memories teaching at Brookside Elementary School?

Carol Brockunier: Some of my fondest memories have been teaching in an integrated classroom with some of the most incredible professionals in the field. In this setting, I have been able to collaborate, share ideas and teach in an environment that has been stimulating and enriching for everyone.

Patch: What will you miss the most?

Carol Brockunier: I will miss learning from my students each and every day.

Patch: What are some things you are looking forward to in retirement?

Carol Brockunier: I look forward to reading whenever I want—besides during summers and school vacations. I can’t wait to travel at off-peak times, scoping out the best scuba dive locations in the world. I’m looking forward to having the time to spend with my family.

Patch: As you reflect on your years in education, can you share some pearls of wisdom about what makes a good teacher?

Carol Brockunier: From my perspective, I feel a good teacher always puts their students first, keeping education child-centered. A good teacher provides opportunities for each child to shine in their own right. Additionally, I feel self-reflection is important; examining what is working and what is not and having the flexibility to make changes when they are needed. Always leaving time to laugh is an important piece in our school day, necessary for cleansing the soul.

Patch: Any wishes or thoughts for colleagues and students as you complete your final year with the district?

Carol Brockunier: I wish that my students continue to work hard and to try their very best. I want them to be proud of who they are and who they will become.

To my colleagues, I will miss the friendships that I’ve made throughout the years and the day-to-day “snippets” that I will always treasure.
