Lakeland Voters to Decide on $160M School Budget on May 21

The Lakeland Central School District will hold the 2013-2014 proposed budget and trustee vote on Tuesday, May 21 at the Van Cortlandtville Elementary School in Mohegan Lake from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Board of Education members adopted the $160,354,916 budget proposal in April. The budget is up 1.99 percent from the current year with a district wide tax levy of 2.93 percent, below the maximum state mandated tax cap number for the district.

The budget maintains current class sizes, a full range of interscholastic and co-curricular programs, and continues existing programs including advanced placement, science research, music, and art programs.

The acceptance of a retirement incentive offered to employees has helped the district close a $1.46 million deficit in the 2013-2014 school budget. A total of 18 certified and 7 support staff members have accepted the retirement incentive.

"Combined with the use of fund balance, monies set aside for increases in retirement costs, and reduction in capital project funds, the district was able to maintain current programs," school district officials said in a statement. Additionally, eight positions will not be replaced due to enrollment decreases and program restructuring.

There are three, three-year trustee positions on the ballot. The candidates for the three positions are incumbents Steven Korn, Elizabeth Kogler and Steve Rosen. They are facing no opposition.
