Lakeland was one of three schools to receive the recognition, school officials said.

Athletic director Dennis Robinson and math teacher Michael Rapalje submitted the application for the award. "Your school has developed a model program  which is an ongoing process for teaching and highlighting sportsmanship," Todd Nelson of the NYSPHSAA said when announcing the award. "We will encourage all of our member schools to look to your school as an example of what can be done to promote sportsmanship as an outcome for all involved with interscholastic athletics."

The district said an important component of the application was the show of sportsmanship by the students at LHS in helping the district host the Pioneer League Dinner. Lakeland High School hosted the fundraising dinner for 10 special education athletic teams from the around the county in the spring. In addition, a 2009 graduate, who works as a DJ, donated his time and provided entertainment that night.
