Lakeland District Science Research Students Win Awards

Elizabeth Sillcocks, Rebecca Amorese, Mary Adeyeye and Alan Cha participated in the Westchester-Rockland Junior Science and Humanities Symposium.

From the Lakeland Central School District: Science research students from the Lakeland Central School District, along with more than 200 other students and teachers from a two-county area, recently participated in the Westchester-Rockland Junior Science and Humanities Symposium at John Jay High School.

Walter Panas High School senior Elizabeth Sillcocks won second place in the "Behavior Science I" speaker category. Lakeland High School senior Rebecca Amorese placed third in the "Behavior Science III" speaker category. Both students will advance onto the 28th Annual Upstate New York Junior Science and Humanities Symposium on March 13 and 14 in Albany where they will get the opportunity to present their research on a state level.

Lakeland High School senior Mary Adeyeye placed fifth in the Genetics speaker category, and a potential spot at states. Walter Panas High School's Alan Cha, a junior, placed first in the display poster category, earning him the Top Display Poster Award. 

The Science Research Program teachers are Rachel Koenigstein at Walter Panas High School and David Sarli at Lakeland High School. 

"The Science Research Team is very proud of everyone who participated and we are super excited to represent Lakeland at the State Competition," Sarli said.

First of all, I don't understand why teachers are paying for anything out of pocket when the supplyRead More lists that parents receive at the end of the summer are as long as their arms. Secondly, SOCIETY lets the kids down?!?!? I think the school taxes in Yorktown should be sufficient so that the teachers don't have to pay any out-of-pocket expenses. SOCIETY does not let the kids down, it is those who are in control of the school tax monies who let the kids down. Perhaps the administrators should take salary cuts, or maybe we should even eliminate some of those administrative positions. No teacher should have to pay for supplies out of pocket.
