Ditch the Treadmill, Break Out Those Dumbells and Barbells

Weight loss, exercise and nutrition tips.

I used to go to a gym in Somers. Every afternoon I would see a woman on the elliptical. She would be on that machine the entire time I was at the gym (at least an hour and a half).

Finally, I asked her what she was up to.

She replied: "I do a lot of cardio, so I can eat whatever I want." She never learned that you do not need to do long cardio workouts to get fat burn. She is going to end up with a lot of sore joints for overworking her body.

What a waste of time and effort. Treadmills and ellipticals are symbolic to me. You spend a lot of time on them and end up in the same place! What a boring way to exercise.

Don't get me wrong, cardio is important. If you want to run, go outside and do so. Don't forget about jumping rope or rowing too. However, remember that weight training is a better fat burner than cardio, so break out those dumbells and barbells.

"[R]emember that weight training is a better fat burner than cardio." Any proof for this absolute statement? And don't you end up in the same spot when you lift weights?

A combo of both is ideal. And of course watching what you put in your mouth is key.

Review Ferrara et all 2006 which studied 39 overweight/obese men and compared aerobic training versus resistence training. The end result was that the aerobic group lost more weight, but also lost a critical percentage of lean body mass, which is a critical factor in maintaining long term weight loss.
I think that you are misinterpreting my comments. Cardio is an important aspect of a fitness plan. I include running, jumping rope and rowing as part of my cardio regimen. I also include weight training and gymnastics to round out my workouts. The point of my comment is that if you run, great, go do it for real and not on a machine. Include weight training in your work outs too. And if you do walking lunges with a barbell or dumbells you don't end up in the same place.

You are absolutely right. What you eat is 50% of your fitness. As I responded to another comment a well rounded program that includes cardio, weight training and gymnastics gives you a much better result. I believe that you need to use your body, not a machine to get you in shape

But truthtfully, any exercise that gets someone moving is better than the alternative: sitting around in front of the TV. So if a person is motivated by a treadmill or elliptical, and find that is what is convenient for them, should they really be criticized? Too many people sit and do nothing all day long, so I say bravo to those jogging "even if" they are on a lowly treadmill.

You don't say where Ferrara et al was published. The Ferrara et al 2006 I found said only 21 of the 63-year old men completed the study. Those who ran or walked and lost about 2% body weight. The 19 who lifted weights gained about 2% in body weight. No mention of % muscle mass change is mentioned in this particular online piece. Another source states a "slight change" but not "a critical percentage of lean body mass". Effects of Aerobic and Resistive Exercise Training on Glucose Disposal and Skeletal Muscle Metabolism in Older Men published in Journal of Gerontology http://biomedgerontology.oxfordjournals.org/content/61/5/480.short

I agree, Arielle. Even just a walk after lunch or dinner is better than nothing. But if you're looking for real fat burning, a mix of cardio and weights is ideal. Plus, weight training is great for women to help keep their bones strong.

Yes Shelly, that is the correct study. I also refered to but did not cite Bryner,R.W., Ullrich, I.H.,Sauers, J., Donley, D., Hornsby, G., Kolar, M. Yeater, R, et al (1999). Effects of Resistance Training vs. Aerobic Training Combined With 800 calorie Liquid Diet on Lean Body Mass and Resting Metabolic Rate. Journal of the American College of Nutrition, 18(2), 115-121.
My main point is not to abandon cardio, it is a required part of creating a program based on functional movement that also should include resistance training and gymnastic modalities. I am stongly opposed to all the machines that have been developed that yield poor results and have done nothing to stem the tide of our increasing obesity rate.

Sorry Candace and Arielle, I don't buy into the something is better than nothing argument. Heart disease kills more women than all cancers combined. As a volunteer EMT, I take in too many people who are suffering from illness and disease caused by poor eating habits and insufficient exercise. At that point the "I wish I had ... is often too late
