Green Machine Visits Mahopac Middle School
Whether it was the smart house that could have its heat and lights turned on and off through a phone app, heating that came through rocks, or an energy-based Jeopardy game, the seven stations that make up The Green Machine trailer that rolled into the parking lot of Mahopac Middle School impressed the students who visited this week. The 24-foot trailer from The Tech Center at Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES provides mobile instruction in sustainability through exhibits of the construction trades at Tech.
“I really liked learning about how different types of light bulbs work and how lights that are brighter can actually save energy,” said sixth-grader Richie Contreras.

The Tech Center’s Paul Purpura, a retired engineer, has been accompanying the trailer as a guide and expert since it began its journey to schools.
Purpura guided the students through all the seven unique demonstration stations within the trailer. They participated in hands-on sustainability activities in Architectural Design, HVAC, Construction Electricity, Masonry/Plumbing, Lighting Efficiency, Carpentry and Smart Electronics.

Though the smart house with its remote heating and lighting and the geothermal heating stations were big hits, saving energy doesn’t have to be complicated, Tech Center Principal Jim Bellucci told students. “There are really simple things that everyone can do to save energy,” he said. “Even turning off the water while you’re brushing your teeth can save a tremendous amount of water throughout the year.”
The Green Machine will be at Mahopac Middle School for a few weeks before heading out to a different school district. “None of my years as an engineer were as rewarding as working with the kids,” said Purpura. “They are so enthusiastic!”
