Croton Student Honored with “Student of Distinction” Award

“Caring, compassionate and meticulous.” These are only a few of the kind words New Visions Health teacher Veronica Farlow used to describe Michaela Turturro, a Croton High School and BOCES Tech Center student who was honored as a “Student of Distinction” at the Croton-Harmon School District’s Board of Education meeting this month.

Turturro, an aspiring nurse who is a student in the New Visions Health program at BOCES, was recognized for “her outstanding student leadership skills, outstanding academic progress and community spirit.” She was joined by her family at the meeting and was awarded a medal and certificate by Steve Lowery, BOCES’ Tech Center Principal.

“Only 20 students from our 18 component school districts make it into the New Visions honors program,” Ms. Farlow said. “Michaela is an outstanding student.”

In the New Visions Health program, Michaela is rotating through 24 different departments at Hudson Valley Hospital. So far, she has worked in pharmacy and radiology in addition to occupational therapy at the Pines Bridge School on the BOCES campus.

“She has gone above and beyond in all of her rotations so far,” said Ms. Farlow. “She asks great questions, which is so important. She also always finds the positive in a field where sometimes it can be a challenge.”

Turturro said she wants to be a nurse because she has, “always wanted to help people.” Upon accepting her award, she thanked those who have helped to support her dream.

“It feels really good to be honored,” Turturro said. “I just want to say thanks to everyone.”

In addition to earning the praise of her teachers and school administrators, Turturro’s parents are equally proud of their daughter’s achievements.

“We are delighted that Michaela has been recognized for all the great things she’s done,” Mrs. Turturro said. “She’s a phenomenal kid and we’ve always been very proud of her. Not long ago, I found something her kindergarten teacher wrote about her and it said how Michaela was a very compassionate kid. I just know she’s going to make a difference in many people’s lives.”
