The library at the Learning Center at Walden, on the campus of Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES, will undergo an amazing transformation when the Scholastic Book Fair takes place December 2-6. The theme for this year is “Reading Oasis- A Cool Place to Discover Hot Books.”
The book fair serves as a fundraiser for both Walden and Pines Bridge and is a much-anticipated event, with students excitedly flocking to shelves and tables bursting with picture books, chapter books, and everything in between.
Book fair hours will be 8:00am-3:00pm every day, with online shopping available after the fair. There will be a special “Family Night” event on Tuesday Dec.3 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Special events are planned for the entire week, such as Crazy Hat Day and Pajama Day. Students might even catch a glimpse of Walden Principal Mike Sowul dressed as a mummy!
This year, the library will host a “Battle of the Coins” before the fair arrives, from November 4 to December 2. The “battle” is a contest to see which class can collect the most loose change and will support “All for Books,” a Scholastic program in which they match funds collected and donate books to organizations in need. This year, Scholastic will donate books to Kids in Distressed Situations, Inc. and the Kids in Need Foundation.
Proceeds from the fair go back into purchasing new books for the library, which serves students from both Walden and Pines Bridge. The Learning Center at Walden serves children with social, emotional and learning needs and Pines Bridge serves children with multiple disabilities.
