Yorktown Tax Receiver Retires After 26 Years of Service

Elfriede H. Schmid's last day as a Yorktown town employee will be on Jan. 3, 2014.

Elfriede H. Schmid – the town of Yorktown's tax receiver who has worked for the town for the last 26 years – is retiring. Her official last day as Yorktown employee will be on Jan. 3, 2014.

"I will miss the people I work with," Schmid told Patch. "People were always nice. I will miss working here."

Schmid, who was born in Munich, Germany, moved to the United States when she was 20 years old. She used to live in Brooklyn and worked in Manhattan before eventually moving to Yorktown in 1976 to raise a family.

Yorktown Supervisor Michael Grace said Schmid was someone "really near and dear" to his heart.

"She is one tough cookie," Grace said. "Nobody mess with her. She's got a tough exterior and bigger heart. She will be very much missed."

Schmid, who suffered a stroke while she was on vacation in Norway in January, said she looks forward to getting healthier, working on her speech and continuing with the physical therapy. She is also looking forward to being able to travel.
