Somers Supervisor to Seek Westchester County Clerk Position

Mary Beth Murphy announced she will not seek re-election as Somers supervisor, a post she has held since 1998.

Somers Supervisor Mary Beth Murphy, who was elected to her position in 1998, has announced she will not seek re-election and will instead be running for Westchester County Clerk this November.

"I really love my role as supervisor here, but I feel it's time to explore new responsibilities," Murphy told Patch. "I've very proud of my years as Somers Supervisor and they demonstrate a good track record of my skills and talent I would be bringing to the Westchester County Clerk office."

Murphy, a lawyer who replaced former supervisor William C. Harding 15 years ago, would be seeking the Republican, Conservative and Independence Party Lines, she said.

She said her background as an attorney and in administration makes her a good candidate for the position of county clerk. In addition, Murphy said her ability to administer and manage the town of Somers is "good evidence" that she would be able to perform the responsibilities of the position she is seeking.

"I am very proud of my accomplishments," Murphy told Patch. "I'm vert proud Somers has the lowest municipal tax rate in the county."

If elected to office, Murphy said she would want to look at the efficiency in the county clerk's office and streamline the areas that might need it. She would also be looking for ways to collaborate with other government agencies.

Murphy unsuccessfully ran a Republican primary in 2010 against State Senator Greg Ball for New York's 40th Senate District seat.
