Somers Historian Named to 'Women of Distinction Hall of Fame'

Somers' town historian Doris Jane Smith is among 22 women who were named to Senator Greg Ball's second Annual Women of Distinction Hall of Fame. 

The Women Of Distinction Hall of Fame was designed to honor outstanding women from throughout the 40th Senate District. Smith, an art teacher at Primrose School, is being honored for her contributions to the community. She was nominated by Somers town officials.

"While all those nominated have worked and volunteered without want of recognition, their efforts have not gone without notice or appreciation," Ball said. "The diversity and depth of their work speaks to the amount of time and dedication each has volunteered on behalf of and in support of a simple truth; that all change is local."

Smith has lived in the town of Somers for 47 years. She has worked for the Somers Central School District for 20 years and the town of Somers Parks and Recreation for 23 years.

She has been a member of the Somers Historical Society for almost half a century, where she served as the co-chair for the Town’s Bicentennial Committees, Chair of the Museum and Reis House Committees and Co-chair of the Education Committee. 

In addition, since 1990, she has been an American Girl Coordinator, where the curriculum was centered on the American Girl Doll and their importance to American History.

The Women Of Distinction Hall of Fame will be hosted on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013 at the Putnam County Emergency Services Building in Carmel starting at 2 p.m. 

The honorees will also be included on a ‘Traveling Wall of Fame’ that will be on display throughout Senator Greg Ball district.
