Police: Sunday Storm Update

Yorktown police provided the following update on Sandy's aftermath.

We hope that you and your family continue to be safe and are doing the best to manage in the aftermath of this unprecedented storm.

We would like to share the very latest information we have with you. Power to most traffic signals, schools, health care facilities and several large residential areas have been restored as of this morning.

There are still many areas without power and much work to do. Our department is actively coordinating with utility companies and other town departments to expedite the restoration process. Disaster Declaration Westchester County has been added to the federal "Major Disaster Declaration." This will allow residents to apply for disaster assistance. Click here to view the FEMA press release. You can apply for disaster assistance by visiting http://www.disasterassistance.gov/.

Garbage Collection:
Garbage collection for Yorktown will resume a normal schedule tomorrow, Monday, November 5th.

Gasoline:
With power being restored to many gas stations in our area and additional deliveries on the way, shortages are expected to ease. Customers are experiencing extremely long lines at gas stations within our area. We have been monitoring this situation closely in the interest of public safety to maintain order. Consumers can visit www.gasbuddy.com and enter their zip code for local gas prices and other station comments. This is a consumer updated site. Consumers may report potential price gouging to the Westchester County Department of Consumer Protection at (914) 995-2155.

Roadways:
Many roadways are still extremely dangerous and several  major electrical repairs (broken utility poles etc.) have yet to be made. Please exercise extreme caution travelling on roadways and assume all down wires are live! Barricades, caution tape and the like are installed for a purpose. Please do not remove these items to facilitate personal travel through an area. Doing so places both your safety and others who follow at extreme risk.
