Newtown Police Chief to White House: 'Ban Assault Weapons'

Kehoe said the weapons used in the Dec. 14 shooting were stronger than those his department carries, according to NBC News.

Newtown Police Chief Michael Kehoe didn't mince words in his message to the White House.

"Ban assault weapons, restrict those magazines that have so many bullets in them, shore up any loopholes in our criminal background checks," he said in an interview with NBC News.

In the interview, Kehoe spoke frankly about what he saw at Sandy Hook Elementary School on the day in December when 20 children and six adults lost their lives in one of the worst school shootings in U.S. history.

Newtown's Police Chief said the shooter was carrying heavier firepower than his officers. "We never like to think we're outgunned in any situation we're dealing with," he told NBC News.

Since the shooting, Kehoe has taken an active leadership role in his response. A week afterwards, he issued a statement to the community assuring residents schools were safe and police were hard at work.

"Our police, fire, and emergency medical personnel reacted quickly and without hesitation, rapidly responding to Sandy Hook Elementary School," he said. "Their professionalism was heartwarming to witness; our community is proud of them."

More recently Kehoe and the Newtown Police Department have been working to ensure officers have access to health benefits and leaves of absence as they recover from their work on December 14 and afterward.

Kehoe's message comes as the advocacy group Sandy Hook Promise launches a nationwide campaign for change in the wake of the shootings. Gun control remains an option on its agenda, as U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy told reporters.

"We have to fundamentally change our approach," co-founder Tom Bittman told press Monday. "It’s not just what government should do. It’s not just what I should do. It’s not just what you should do. It’s what we should do together."

I would be willing to bet HE can't DEFINE what is and what ISN'T an assault weapon. We still don't have ANY more information about the shooting than when it happened. He should be doing HIS job and stop talking!!! We want to see the video surveillance. We want to know which guns were ACTUALLY used. Is this case going to be another "Fast&Furious" where after many many months, we STILL don't know what happened? There is NO ONE to bring to trial. Why the delay? I just love this one " Kehoe said the weapons used in the Dec. 14 shooting were stronger than those his department carries, according to NBC News." Did he actually say "stronger" ? You mean that his department does not have AR-15's available? If they don't, then he should be replaced with someone that actually knows police work!!!! The longer the facts take to get out, the more the suspicion of a cover up.

Assault rifle.1) grenade launcher 2) bayonet lug. 3)pistol grip. 4) retractable stock. 5)flash suppressor. Can the chief tell me if any of these had anything to do with the shooting at Newtown? Let me help him out. NO they didn't. This is mass hysteria and every official having a knee jerk response. We have Lawson the books that if enforced would stop many shootings. Is the chief and all you readers aware that in Feb, 2012 the State of CT decided not to vote in favor of a Mental health bill that would have most likely stopped the Newtown Shooting? 44 states have some form of an AOT law. If a person in mentally ill the State has the right to make sure they receive outpatient health care. What A Shame CT. You missed that one so lets blame the gun instead.

Ahhhhh, some Police Chief. There is video of his cops taking the AR-15 out of the trunk. He did not bring the rifle into the School. There will be no trail so that inconvenient truth will not come out in Court.

That was the shotgun in the trunk. They can be seen pumping the gun to clear it.Lets all be realistic, it's not the weapon , it's the sick person. On the same day this happened in Newtown, A man in china walked into a school and attacked 20 children with a sword. The man that shot the firemen In upstate Ny , killed his mother with a hammer. How many people were killed with a bomb made out of fertilizer a few years ago. As I said its not the weapon, it's the person
