Kaplowitz, Harckham Lead in Re-Election Bid

By Plamena Pesheva and Tom Auchterlonie:

Democratic County Legislators Peter Harckham and Michael Kaplowitz are leading over their Republican challengers.

According to unofficial results from the Westchester County Board of Elections, with 49 out of 57 districts reporting, Kaplowitz leads opponent Greg Kane with 7,163 votes (61 percent) to 4,501 votes (39 percent).

"I want to thank all the voters in County Legislative District 4 for their confidence and their support," Kaplowitz told Patch. "I look forward to continuing my public service as their county legislator in White Plains. Unlike Washington, I practice bipartisanship and cooperation and use that bipartisanship to keep the focus on sound fiscal policies, balanced budgets, cutting taxes and delivering essential government services."

Kaplowitz's District 4 contains part of Yorktown, New Castle and part of Somers.

With 45 out of 52 districts in, Harckham leads opponent Andrea Rendo by 5,608 votes to 4,945, or 53 percent to 47 percent. Harckham represents District 2, which includes Bedford, Mount Kisco, Lewisboro, Pound Ridge, North Salem and part of Somers.

Harckham told Patch that Rendo called to concede. Rendo could not be reached for an interview.

Harckham said he is "still energized" by the work, referring to what the job entails.

He also weighed in on the re-election of Republican Rob Astorino for county executive; his opponent, New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson, announced that he conceded. Harckham described the outcome, which also involves the Democrats keeping the county board of legislators, as one of voters wanting checks and balances. He also wants to have a "bipartisan government."
