Yorktown Firefighter Brings Dog Out to Safety

The dog was was found inside a home on Spring Valley Road. Firefighters were dispatched on a residential alarm and found smoke coming from the house.

Yorktown firefighters took care of not only a home on Spring Valley Road, but also a family dog when they were dispatched on a residential fire alarm on Wednesday, May 15 at about 2:41 p.m.

There was no one at the home and the fire alarm was sounding when firefighters got to the scene. There was also smoke coming from house because of food that was left on the stove. The homeowner had forgotten to turn off the stove, Second Assistant Fire Chief Paul Dillon said.

But when firefighter Rich Weber checked the house to make sure there was no one at home, he found a “terrified” dog upstairs. Weber brought him out of the house while the rest of the firefighters were getting rid of the smoke.

“[The homeowners] were appreciative we were able to remediate the situation,” Dillon said.

There was no damage to the house other than a broken window and door when firefighters made their way into the home.

Dillon said firefighters often find pets in homes and even though they don’t put the same value on them as they would when trying to save a person’s life, they do what they can to make sure they help them.

“We know they are an intricate part of the family,” he said. “Pets are not just property, they are part of the family.”
