Police: Jefferson Valley Man Steals Girlfriend's Backpack, Found in Possession of Drugs

A 21-year-old Jefferson Valley man faces a number of criminal charges after he stole his girlfriend's backpack and was found in possession of drugs and three hypodermic syringes, Yorktown police said. 

Michael J. Vazquez was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, a felony; as well as seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and criminally possessing a hypodermic instrument, both misdemeanors. 

Police said Vazquez's girlfriend, a Cortlandt Manor resident, called police on Oct. 18 at about 9 p.m. to report that while she was at a Perry Street home, the man stole her backpack, which contained $1,280 worth of assorted computer and phone equipment.

Vazquez fled the scene on foot, Yorktown police said. While searching the Jefferson Valley area, police located Vazquez on East Main Street.

When the man was placed under arrest, he was found to be in possession of a quantity of suboxone and three hypodermic syringes, police said.

Vazquez was served with a temporary order of protection and then remanded to the Westchester County Jail on $3,500.00 bail. He was scheduled to appear in Yorktown Town Court on Oct. 23.
