A Buchanan woman and Peekskill man were nabbed by police and charged with several felony and misdemeanor charges for stealing items from TJ Maxx and leading police on a chase, Yorktown police said.
Christine Nohai, 41, and Cavin Williams, 31, fled TJ Maxx, located in the Triangle Shopping Center area, in a black pickup truck on Jan. 18 at about 1:03 p.m. They had used a stolen credit card to purchase $243.90 worth of clothing from the store, police said.
Yorktown police officers Kathryn McGuire and Brian Nicholson were dispatched to the scene. While on route, officer Nicholson saw the vehicle and attempted to stop it on Crompond Road.
But when the vehicle did not stop, he followed it onto Granite Springs Road and Quaker Church Road. During the police chase, Williams, who was the driver of the vehicle, violated several vehicle and traffic laws, police said.
Then, the vehicle collided into an embankment at the intersection of Quaker Church Road and Saw Mill River Road and Williams fled the scene into the woods.
Nohai was taken into custody at the scene while police searched the area for the man. Williams was located and taken into custody on the property of the BOCES Pines Bridge campus by Detectives Brian Shanahan and Sean Lewis.
Police said the man and woman were in possession of seven stolen credit cards. In addition Williams' driver's license was suspended, police said.
Nohai was charged with seven counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a felony; petty larceny and third-degree unlawfully fleeing a police officer with a motor vehicle, misdemeanors.
Williams was charged with seven counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a felony; petty larceny and third-degree unlawfully fleeing a police officer with a motor vehicle, misdemeanors. He was also charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, a misdemeanor; and nine vehicle and traffic law violations.
The man and woman were remanded to the Westchester County Jail without bail and scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, Jan. 22.
