5-Year-Old Girl Dies After Being Pulled From Pool at Yorktown Home

Adea Morina was on life support at the Westchester Medical Center. She passed away on Sunday, July 8.

The 5-year-old girl from the Bronx, who on Friday, passed away on Sunday at the Westchester Medical Center, where she was on life support,  said.

Police identified the little girl as Adea Morina, who was visiting relatives for a party at the Yorktown home on Rustic Ridge Court. There were nine other children and one adult in the pool area when Adea apparently went into the pool unnoticed, police said.

When she was seen floating under the water, she was pulled out of the pool and a police officer started performing CPR when he arrived at the home, officials said. Two members of the  and two Empress Yorktown paramedics also arrived at the home and continued to perform advanced life support measures.

The child was taken to the Hudson Valley Hospital Center in Cortlandt where she was revived. She was then transported to the Westchester Medical Center and put on life support.

Adea passed away on Sunday, July 8.

The Yorktown Police Department, along with the Westchester County District Attorney's Office and the Westchester County Medical Examiner's Office are conducting the investigating, Lt. Richard Malan said in a press release today. It does not appear that any foul play was involved, police said.

The Westchester Medical Examiner will determine the cause of the child's death. Police are continuing the investigating as they await the results.

'Unnoticed?" Very bad. I used to be a LG, in the ocean, which is a whole differenet animal than a pool guard. Drowning itself is quick and silent, although it may be preceded by distress which is more visible. A person drowning is unable to shout or call for help, or seek attention, as they cannot obtain enough air. The instinctive drowning response is the final set of reactions in the 20 – 60 seconds before sinking underwater, and to the untrained eye can look similar to calm safe behavior. Lifeguards and other persons trained in rescue learn to recognize drowning people by watching for these instinctive movements. Obviously, no one was watching or even payng attention which is a crime in my view. Poor girl deserved a better fate.

May people do not have a clue how fast this can happen. I've seen recommendations that the adult supervising children in a pool cannot be doing anything else at the time - no talking on the phone, no texting, no reading, no drinking and no conversations with other adults because - as the LG said, in the amount of time you are looking away, 60 seconds or less, you may have a tragedy. Just really sad.

My bestfriend was the one who pulled her out of that pool. Adea was a really sweet adorable girl, she did not deserve any of this. I have to give a lot of credit to their family, they are really strong people. I pray for her, shes in a better place now though. Adea was so scared to go in the pool and would not even go clos to it. She was so happy and so full of life and happiness. She would have grown to be an amazing women, RIP Adea we all love you angel.
