The costs of home heating oil and electricity have been rising and will continue to rise. I pay more to heat my home than to keep my car filled with gas. Simple measures, such as putting in sufficient attic insulation can cut both heating and cooling costs.

New York’s NYSERDA (New York State Energy Research and Development Authority) has programs for free or low-cost home energy assessments, rebates for upgrades, and low-interest loans, to help homeowners reduce their energy costs.
I recently had a free home energy assessment done. I followed up with putting new insulation in the attic, insulation around the foundations, and leak sealing. The predicted payback is less than ten years. However, my home did feel warmer and less drafty immediately.
