It is hard to think about cold winter temperatures and drafty homes now that spring is really here. However, this is a good time to think about home energy efficiency.
The costs of home heating oil and electricity have been rising and will continue to rise. I pay more to heat my home than to keep my car filled with gas. Simple measures, such as putting in sufficient attic insulation can cut both heating and cooling costs.
Sealing leaks can not only make your home feel more comfortable by reducing drafts, but will also result in significant energy cost savings.

New York’s NYSERDA (New York State Energy Research and Development Authority) has programs for free or low-cost home energy assessments, rebates for upgrades, and low-interest loans, to help homeowners reduce their energy costs.
I recently had a free home energy assessment done. I followed up with putting new insulation in the attic, insulation around the foundations, and leak sealing. The predicted payback is less than ten years. However, my home did feel warmer and less drafty immediately.

The Yorktown Energy Advisory Committee and GreenYorktown will host a presentation by Elyssa Rothe, Westchester Coordinator for NYSERDA's Energy $mart Communities Program, Monday, May 21 at 7:30 p.m., Yorktown Town Hall.
You are invited to learn how you can get a free or low-cost home energy assessment and incentives for home energy upgrades. You can make your home more comfortable and save money on heating. Everyone who attends will receive a free CFL bulb.
